Redox potential

A measure of soil’s tendency to gain or lose electrons, reflecting oxidation-reduction conditions.

Regolith

The loose, unconsolidated material covering solid bedrock, within which soils form.

Relative humidity

The amount of water vapor in the air relative to the maximum it could hold at a given temperature.

Remote sensing

The use of satellite or aerial sensors to collect information about land, vegetation, and soils from a distance.

Renewable resource

A natural resource that can be replenished within a human lifetime, such as soil fertility, forests, or groundwater.

Residual soil

Soil that forms in place directly from the weathering of underlying bedrock.

Respiration

The metabolic process by which organisms release energy by breaking down organic compounds with oxygen.

Rhizobia

Nitrogen-fixing bacteria that live in symbiosis with legume root nodules.
