The upper layer of earth consisting of mineral particles, organic matter, water, and air, essential for plant growth and ecosystems.

  • Decomposition

The breakdown of organic matter by soil organisms, releasing nutrients back into the soil and atmosphere.

  • Nutrient cycling

The continuous transformation and movement of nutrients within ecosystems, involving uptake, decomposition, and recycling.

  • Cyanobacteria

Photosynthetic bacteria (blue-green algae) that fix atmospheric nitrogen and are important in soil fertility, especially in crusts and aquatic systems.
