Accelerated erosion

Erosion that occurs faster than natural geological processes due to human activities such as deforestation, overgrazing, hillside ploughing, road building, or uncontrolled burning. This type of erosion often leads to serious land degradation.

Related terms

  • Erosion

The wearing away and removal of soil or rock particles by wind, water, or ice, often accelerated by human activity.

  • Deforestation

The removal of trees and forests for agriculture, settlements, or logging, often causing erosion, biodiversity loss, and carbon emissions.

  • Overgrazing

Excessive grazing pressure that reduces vegetation cover, compacts soil, and accelerates erosion.

  • Land degradation

The decline in land quality caused by erosion, compaction, salinization, nutrient depletion, or other processes reducing productivity.
